At the start of May I took a leap to reduce my hours with my job outside of yoga to just 1 day a week. It’s been scary but freeing. I have found myself questioning the direction of my business. What do I want to offer? What’s my ‘niche’? This has always been a battle for me given I love all corners of yoga. I love feeling strong in my asana practise and sharing this with others to encourage them to feel strong, yet I also love the subtler practise, simply siting and meditating (usually in the morning) and similarly sharing this with others whether its through Nidra, yin or mediation.

What has been coming up for me is the reminder of Santosha (contentment or acceptance). Finding contentment with what is, how I practise, what I chose to share. Because at the end of the day, you should practise what you love and teach what you love.

The Buddhist statement “Enough is a feast” beautifully captures the idea of contentment. Perhaps a mantra to use for yourself and share with others

I made the decision to join @thecollectivekula January ‘meditation’ group this year. I put meditation in quotations because she actually calls them sits.

Most mornings instead of going straight into my day I have joined a sit and they have helped me more than I could have imagined. With losing my uncle at the start of January and the looming fear of leaving my job to pursue a career in yoga, I have been hit with a whole jumble of emotions.

Each sit has given me a little break through. I thought I’d share the biggest ones in the hope they can also do the same:

- Saying no. Almost everything you have in your life is there because you’ve said yes to something. For me this made me question the things I often complain about/ things that stress me out. How often do you find yourself complaining about the same thing? Can this be changed simply by saying no?
- Courage. People often say ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’ How about shifting the narrative to what could I miss out on if I don’t make this decision? What potential might never have the possibility to flourish if I remain where I am?
- Phases. We come from nature. We are nature. Nothing in nature is linear, the phases of the moon, seasons and everything else we see as nature, they experience flux. As humans we seem to have caught ourselves in the need to always be doing, always chasing… but we too should embrace seasonality. However that expresses itself we are all going to experience the eb and flow of life being shit and life being amazing, the light and the dark.

I’m going to try to continue this self study into the year and will offer little break throughs as I go 🫶🏼🤍🥰

The handstand journey is a long one. Just like a baby learning to walk, it is a new skill. We have to teach our wrists to bear the weight of our body, which they are not naturally built to do. If you are on the journey you’ll also recognise that strength plays a massive part 🔥

Strength can be built through drills and conditioning. But it’s the body awareness that can take time, to know where your limbs are and how to adjust them in real-time. This can only be learnt through practise as your brain learns to adjust and position your body instinctively.

How to?
You try again and again and again :)

This can be a really intense pose for a lot of people, but with so many variations available, it can be made accessible for everybody.

Yesterday I joined a call about cultural appropriation specifically in yoga. This topic seems to be talked about more and more, not only about yoga but other practises too. For me personally I believe it is important as a teacher to come into it with curiosity and to raise awareness. As a white Western yoga teacher, I feel that even more, it is an honour to pass over this sacred practise to so many people🙏🏼

I think one of the main battles yoga faces is of course the emphasis on the physical practise. Some may say that this is a natural shift as it has become even more important because of our sedentary lives nowadays. This emphasis may just be a reflection of the Western need to move out bodies. However, this commodification completely strips back the roots and spiritual meaning of yoga. It has also led to a huge misunderstanding for many people who believe they are not able to practise yoga because they ‘aren’t flexible enough’.

The reality is that many people have come to move their bodies when they come to a yoga class, but if I can share a little bit of philosophy each class, include short silent meditation at the start/ end, encourage full awareness of the breath, encourage observation of the mind, then hopefully people can start to understand that the physical practise is just a doorway to a deeper sense of our being💭🧘‍♀️💫

Humming bee breath ~ Bhrāmari
Inhale and exhale fully whilst humming ‘Hmmmmm’. As you release all of the breath out of the system your exhale is lengthened which in itself helps to down regulate the nervous system.

Including the audible humming sound stimulates the vagus nerve which is intimately linked to the parasympathetic nervous system. Taking you to a deeper sense of calm and relaxation. A great breath work to do before bed 💭

In the photo I am practicing Humming bee breath with Shanmuki mudra which closes the eyes, ears, nose and mouth (or the gates of perception) to draw awareness inwards.

Photo dump of the most amazing place I have visited in India so far. A place so beautiful with rolling hills, rocky outcrops and plateaus - the bouldering is amazing and vastly untouched. I found myself on the sketchiest high ball ever that I was determined to complete, I think I nearly gave Toby a heart attack whilst he was trying to spot me 😂 we also had an awesome night bouldering under the full moon with @tomshampiadventures

As well as climbing we spent time exploring the temples with a friendly guide who showed us so many things we wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. He also kept offering to take pictures of us around the temples 😂

We saw a lot of wildlife too including crocodiles 🐊 on a night time tour! A few snakes, peacocks, scorpion, pangolin, monkeys, otters, turtles!

I’ll miss this place a lot and I know I’ll be back one day 🤩🙏🏼🛕

~ 300 hour yoga teacher training complete ~
One month training with some of the most amazing, inspiring and knowledgeable teachers in India.

I always knew that it was important for me to seek a yoga training in India, running towards something my heart knew was right. I’m so grateful that this decision led me here to a training that challenged me on so many levels. A month filled with so much new practical knowledge in Hatha and Ashtanga vinyasa, alignment and teaching methodology but also understanding gained through the subtler practices of pranayama and meditation.

My philosophy teacher said right at the start “we have an outer and inner world, but our outwardly facing lives are causing our inner world to shrink”. I had never thought about it like this. Through this training I am even more inspired to attune to this inner world, by taking more time to pause and lean into the space in between and I hope I can bring this through my teaching 🙏🏼

I will be back from India at the end of September and I am super excited to get back to teaching 🧡

It’s great to have a Toby to practise adjustments on 🥰

I’ve learnt so much about hands on adjustments in my 300 hours course. Knowing when your touch can benefit someone and take them into a more refined/ deeper or correct alignment. But this is equally as important as knowing when to leave someone to their own practise. So they have time to find the alignment themself. 🙏🏼

Last night for @yogabyanais birthday our teacher invited us to his girlfriend’s house. Four generations in one house, letting us into their home and sharing some delicious food. I am so warmed by the kindness shown and their eagerness to meet us. Even though there was an extreme language barrier, sometimes kindness and compassion doesn’t need words 🇮🇳 🙏🏼 🐈 🍛 🐕 🏠

Peak District February 2024

Extremely delayed post as I have only just gotten the pictures developed. These are the only pictures we have from this trip as we did not use our phones the entire time. We navigated using a map and a compass and my amazing sense of direction. We were unbounded by time, eating when we felt hungry and sleeping when we were tired. Roaming freely through the rainy peaks just you and me.

We will do a trip like this every year to disconnect and reconnect.

P.s. you can tell Toby had the black and white roll and mine is the colour 😂😂
